Phil Smith thought ex-EastEnder Letitia Dean turning on the Christmas lights in Ipswich would make a good snap for his collection.

The 49-year-old started by firing off a few shots of the warm-up act on stage. But before the main attraction showed up, Mr Smith was challenged by a police officer who asked if he had a licence for the camera.

After establishing its supremacy in the blogosphere, the Instablogs Networks, Asia’s largest blog network, has achieved another first by launching the country’s maiden global online newspaper.

Combining together blogging, citizen journalism, traditional media and other channels of information, the company has developed www.instablogs.com into a global news portal in the true sense of the word.

Adopting a collaborative news model structured on interactive mode, it offers a rich and varied content with inspired citizen opinions from all over the world. Instablogs has created an environment in which passive readers and viewers spread across 60 major countries of the world have become active participants. With over 15,000 contributors across the world and 30 lakh page views, it is challenging and confronting the normal media channels.

The cartograms below show the world through the eyes of editors-in-chief, in 2007. Countries swell as they receive more media attention; others shrink as we forget them. These maps allow you to grasp several media trends at a glance. First, traditional newspapers are highly selective in their coverage of world news. Looking at the three British dailies, editors favour countries that are bigger and more populous, but also closer to home and better developed.

The issue came to light in the summer of 2005, when a court in London heard the case of a young girl who was tortured after being accused of being possessed.

The jury learnt a new word, kindoki. It is what the Congolese call witchcraft.

As humans we have a difficult time comprehending large numbers, and vast collections of people perhaps in particular. There is something simply surreal about a pilgrimage that attracts more people than the population of Texas or a festival that draws thirty thousand revelers deep into one of the harshest deserts on Earth. The following three events are vastly different in terms of geography, history and purpose but are all impressive in their own way and right as these images show.
